Growing up in the war years for 1939 - 1945 families were all encouraged to grow their own vegetables. “Dig for Victory” was the slogan on posters everywhere. My mother was a keen gardener and was very proud of her vegetable plot but always found space to grow flowers. Lots of “old fashioned” flowers like delphiniums, lupins and marigolds. As the plants grew we would divide them to share with neighbours and friends. It was part of the community spirit of the war years. Fields where we played as children were covered with buttercups and daisies and milkmaids, a flower rarely seen now, enjoying a happy childhood in spite of war.
Flowers have always been a part of life, giving joy and happiness and a comfort in sorrow.
We celebrate the life of our Church with flowers for all occasions. At Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus. We mourn his death during lent but rejoice with flowers to celebrate his resurrection and ascension into heaven at Easter. A bride carries flowers at her wedding to celebrate a new life with her husband and to give thanks to God for his blessing on their marriage. We give flowers for many occasions in life, birthdays and anniversaries, and to cheer people up who are ill or need help and in sad times in their lives. To let them know we all care.
Especially, we send flowers for loved ones who have passed away. Giving thanks for lives well lived and to send them to live in peace with God.
We all love to receive flowers and arrange them. Flowers always mix and blend together, whichever colour or bloom.
It should be the same with people. We are all different in every way, colour, speech, language, creed, but we are all God’s people. We should respect all the different cultures and beliefs and learn to live together in harmony and pray for a peaceful world.
For our 80th Birthday, on 7th and 8th June Keysoe WI are holding a flower festival in Keysoe Church. The flowers will represent the diverse activities of the WI and commemorate events in the world which happened from 1945 - 1925. There will be a service of Thanksgiving on Sunday 8th June and cream teas on Saturday and Sunday June 7th and 8th. All are welcome.
